Building the Bizarre, Beautiful World of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

In The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Disney’s live-action re-creation of the E.T.A. Hoffmann story and subsequent classical children’s ballet, Morgan Freeman plays Drosselmeyer, giver of enchanted gifts and leader of a star-studded cast that kicks off in picture-perfect Victorian London, giving way to the magical realms where Clara (Mackenzie Foy) hunts for a key to open a final bequest from her late mother: a filigree silver egg that obviously possesses significance beyond knickknackery and sentiment.

Sugar Plum Fairies & Ballerinas Populate Mystical The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Trailer

Mackenzie Foy is Clara, the young girl whose search for a key made by her mother lands in her a magical realm of toy soldiers, ballerinas and Sugar Plum Fairies. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will introduce E.T.A. Hoffman’s 1816 story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” to global audiences in this Disney adaptation, taking the classic fairy tale and adapting it (while enhancing many of the mystical elements) for the big screen.

Watch the First Trailer for Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

The first trailer for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms from director Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat) is here, and it’s a looker. The sumptuous story takes place largely in a bizarre (but beautiful) parallel world, home to places like the Land of Flowers, the Land of Sweets and the Land of Snowflakes. Sounds like a pretty good place, right? Yet Clara (Mackenzie Foy) decides to enter the titular Fourth Realm to confront called Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren),
