Peter Jackson Working on Multiple New “Lord of the Rings” Films For Warner Bros.

We knew Peter Jackson was returning to Middle-earth, but we thought that return trip was limited to re-releasing his groundbreaking trilogy in new remastered and extended versions. Today, huge news broke—Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav revealed that Jackson is really returning to the realms created by J.R.R. Tolkien for a series of new films.

On a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call, Zaslav revealed that the company was in the early stages of script development for new Lord of the Rings movies,

“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy Returning to Theaters in Remastered & Extended Version

Peter Jackson’s colossal The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a mighty, jaw-dropping achievement that wowed audiences and fellow filmmakers alike (James Cameron said the trilogy helped inspire Avatar) is returning to theaters this summer. Only this time, the trilogy will be even bigger.

Warner Bros. and Fathom Events are teaming up to release Jackson’s magnum opus in extended versions, including those Jackson remastered for the 4K Ultra HD rerelease that came out in 2020.

Amazon Reveals First Image From “The Lord of the Rings” Series

Amazon Claims The Lord of the Rings for Multiple Season Series

They say that nothing is ever a sure thing, but Lord of the Rings challenges conventional wisdom. Peter Jackson’s The Return of the King won Best Picture at the 2004 Oscars, and the combined financial success of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series’ is in the billions. Amazon is banking on the popularity of the Middle Earth adventures and has ordered a new series that is straight to multi-season.
