When director Rob Marshall cast Halle Bailey to play Ariel in the new live-action film The Little Mermaid, he knew it was important to both bring mermaid energy and believability to everything about this updated version of the character, and that included Halle’s hair. Of all the memorable aspects of Ariel from the 1989 animated feature, her redheaded, flowing locks became one of the most iconic.
Marshall enlisted hair designer and educator Camille Friend to create an equally iconic design for Ariel’s hair in the new film,

In 100 days, Disney will release their live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and a brand new teaser gives us a fresh look at Halle Bailey as Ariel. The timing of the teaser release does double duty, too, as this year Disney is celebrating their centennial.
The new teaser features Bailey singing “Part of Your World” while we get a glimpse of the aquatic world in which The Little Mermaid is set.

Thirty years ago, The Little Mermaid initiated the second golden age of Disney animated features, with a spectacular score, including what star Jodi Benson calls the “I dream” opening number that introduces us to the title character, “Part of Your World.” The young mermaid princess sings about wanting to explore the human world. “I want to be where the people are/I want to see/want to see ’em dancin’/Walkin’ around on those/(Whad’ya call ’em?) oh – feet.”

Animator Glen Keane has created some of the most timeless Disney characters of the last four decades, and some of the greatest animated heroines of our time. From his hand came Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Pocahontas, and he served as an executive producer on the 2010 hit Tangled. Keane is also credited with bringing Aladdin, the Beast from Beaty and the Beast and Tarzan to life.
