The 91st Academy Awards Were Packed with Powerful Moments

Wow, 2018 gave an incredible class of movies. It was a year that moved, inspired, thrilled and challenged us in innovative ways. We have been celebrating these filmmakers each day, but last night’s Oscars ceremony shone a light on the astonishing diversity and power in storytelling over the past year. BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody,

The Favourite‘s Oscar-Nominated Production Designer Re-Makes History

*In the run-up to this Sunday’s Oscars telecast, we’re sharing some of our favorite interviews with nominees.

England’s Queen Anne, who only reigned from 1707 to 1714, is hardly the most notable female British sovereign, but to watch her played by Olivia Colman in director Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite, one might wonder why this the first we’re hearing of her in so long. True to history,

The Favourite‘s Oscar-Nominated DP on Creating one of the Year’s Most Ravishing Films

*In the run-up to this Sunday’s Oscars telecast, we’re sharing some of our favorite interviews with nominees.

Before The Favourite came his way, Robbie Ryan had never worked with Yorgos Lanthimos, but he did admire the Greek director’s offbeat art house films Dogtooth and Killing of a Sacred Deer. So when Lanthimos invited Ryan to shoot his 18th-century black comedy about Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and rival courtiers (Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone),

The 5 Luminous Worlds Created by This Year’s Oscar-Nominated Production Designers

The Oscar-nominated films of 2018 took us places painstakingly real and realms that were gloriously dreamy. Thanks to these professional world-builders, we get to experience a Queen’s court and a King’s homeland that we otherwise would never see. From the African inspired design of Black Panther to a spaceship headed for the moon in First Man, this year’s crop of films gave us breathtaking places and spaces. Here are some of our favorite contributions by the current Oscar-nominated production designers.

How The Favourite‘s Oscar-Nominated Co-Writer Tony McNamara Twisted History

With 10 Oscar-nominations, Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite was matched only by Alfonso Cuaron’s elegiac masterpiece Roma for the largest haul of the year. The films couldn’t be much more different, but then again, every film Lanthimos makes couldn’t be much more different from his peers. The Favourite is nothing like anything the Oscar-nominated Lanthimos has made in the past, either, concerning itself with two rivals, Lady Sarah (Oscar-nominated Rachel Weisz) and Abigail (Oscar-nominated Emma Stone) for the affection and patronage of Queen Anne (Oscar-nominated Olivia Colman) in 18th century England.

Oscar Watch: The Favourite‘s Production Designer Re-Designs History With a Flourish

England’s Queen Anne, who only reigned from 1707 to 1714, is hardly the most notable female British sovereign, but to watch her played by Olivia Colman in director Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite, one might wonder why this the first we’re hearing of her in so long. True to history, Lanthimos’s depiction of the queen shows her nearly constantly ill and in other ways unwell—she is in possession of 17 rabbits,

Oscar Watch: The Favourite‘s Editor on Cutting the Year’s Most Deliciously Devilish Film

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite is a delicious piece of filmmaking. Gorgeous to look at, actors having the times of their lives, and that special brand of merry malice that Lanthimos is uniquely capable of is all on the menu here. Set in the 18th-century, The Favourite revolves around Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and rival courtiers Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail (Emma Stone) who vie for her attention,

Glimpse Three of the Year’s Best Performances in First Full The Favourite Trailer

A new Yorgos Lanthimos is an event. It’s an opportunity to go into a theater and either white-knuckle your way through something deeply alarming (here’s looking at you, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Dogtooth), or something offbeat, funny, and deliciously weird (The Lobster). Now the unpredictable director is back with The Favourite, a period piece set in 18th century England,

Witness the Madness of the Court in Debut Trailer for The Favourite

Forget the Mad King of Game of Thrones and The Crown’s stalwart Elizabeth II. There’s new royalty in town, and she’s losing her mind and having a splendid time doing it in the first teaser trailer for The Favourite.

During one of the numerous wars between England and France, Olivia Colman plays Queen Anne, an unstable matriarch whose court looks as insane as she may be turning.
