Director Hanelle Culpepper on Filming Fights & Making History in “Kung Fu”

Directing a series pilot has a huge impact on the viability of the show, putting tremendous pressure on the director. It’s pressure Hanelle Culpepper can handle, exemplified by the ratings and stellar reviews of her award-winning work on last year’s Star Trek: Picard. On The CW’s Kung Fu, she was chosen by showrunner Christina M. Kim to direct the first two episodes of a series making history as the first hour-long drama featuring a predominantly Asian-American cast.

Despite losing the talented Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman, Chung was confident in the show’s approach to finding a new lead. “What I think is great is that it sounds like they’re going to treat this as Kate Kane leaving Gotham, and a new character comes in to carry the torch as Batwoman,”

Ruby Rose’s Batwoman Role Will Be Expanded in Spinoff Pilot Episode

Kate Kane was one of the most buzzed about TV characters of last year, even though she only had a few minutes of screen time and appeared on a series other than her own. Ruby Rose was announced in the role to much fanfare back in August, but the news was just that she would appear in the Arrow-verse crossover event “Elseworlds.” Unsurprisingly, Rose made a magnificent debut as Kane and Batwoman has officially snagged a standalone series.

The CW has been delivering the superhero goods on the small screen for years now, but things have gotten really interesting since 2014. That was the year the network began airing a yearly crossover event that involved many of the stars from their live-action series.  The event, called the “Arrowverse,” connects the superheroes from Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, while including folks like Superman, John Constantine and more.

We were thrilled when we heard that Ruby Rose was going to be Batwoman for the CW. The multi-talented Rose is stepping into the role of heroine Kate Kane. Mysteries Abound in Riverdale Season 3 Trailer

Is it ever spring in Riverdale? The doom, gloom, and teenage angst seems to hang over the town in an autumn wintry haze. But let’s be honest. We are here for the drama and drama there shall be. Season 3 even seems to be slipping into the occult, perhaps a small nod to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Afterlife with Archie zombie series. Aguirre-Sacasa also created the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the definitely looks like it will have ritualistic elements.

Ruby Rose is Batwoman in the CW’s Groundbreaking new Series

We were cautiously optimistic when we heard that the CW was creating a Batwoman series based on the DC comics character Kate Kane. Now that we know Ruby Rose will be starring as the greatest Gotham hero not named Batman, we’re thrilled. The series isn’t 100% confirmed—first, Rose will be appearing in the networks’ annual Arrow-verse crossover event in December. If the introduction excites fans as much as the mere notion is exciting us, then the CW could be green lighting a Batwoman series for the 2019-2020 season.

It was recently reported that Batwoman would be appearing in the Arrowverse for the CW’s annual crossover event in December; now Deadline reports the brilliant Kate Kane of Gotham might be getting her own show, which would be a groundbreaking moment for the superhero world. Batwoman would represent the first time a gay character lead a live-action superhero series.
