Watch the VFX Magic that Brought Peter Cushing Back to Life in Rogue One

Telling any story about the Death Star is difficult to pull off without involving the malevolent and arrogant Grand Moff Tarkin. Peter Cushing who played the ship’s commander in the original 1977 Star Wars passed away at 81 in 1994 posing a challenge for Rogue One filmmakers. To properly tell the story of the rebels who attempted to steal the ships plans, Tarkin needed to appear onscreen.

See How They Created the U-Wing in Rogue One

One of the coolest new additions to the rebel air fleet in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the U-Wing. The U-Wing is described as a sturdy transport and gunship that “must penetrate heavy fire zones to deposit soldiers onto battlefields and then fly air support during dangerous missions against the Empire.” The U-Wing factors heavily into Rogue One—it’s the ship that Jyn and her crew take to Scarif in the final phase of their mission to steal the Death Star plans.

The Other Possible Endings to Rogue One You Almost Saw

One of the most astonishing things about Gareth Edwards Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was that ending (spoiler alert). As we wrote last week, Edwards and screenwriter Gary Whitta were pleasantly surprised when their original idea for the fate of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and her rebel crew was championed by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. They simply didn't expect that making their courageous heroes pay the ultimate price to steal the plans to the Death Star would be allowable,

See How They Obliterated Jedha in Killer Rogue One VFX Video

The Oscar-nominated visual effects of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were, inarguably, the most talked about of the year. First was the fact that the film recreated the late, great actor Peter Cushing through digital effects and motion-capture performance, making his Grand Moff Tarkin a major character in the film. Then there was that incredible ending, which (spoiler alert) saw the Death Star Plans handed to a 19-year old Princess Leia (the late,

Secret History of Rogue One‘s Aliens Revealed

One of the many delightful aspects of Rogue One was the films' treatment of the many aliens Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) comes into contact with. Some of the aliens are recognizable to any Star Wars fans—who among us didn’t delight in seeing Admiral Raddus, a member of the Mon Calamari race, supporting Jyn and the rebels' mission to the steal the Death Star plans? You may be forgiven for assuming on first blush that Admiral Raddus was,

Go Inside the Rogue One Creature Shop

The Creature Shop is one of the most important production aspects of any Star Wars film. No amount of CGI can ever make up for how crucial it is for Star Wars films to be inhabited by creatures created by hand, giving actors the unbeatable advantage of being able to interact with a creature that’s really stand there before them. For Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, that meant leaning on Creature Effects Supervisor Neal Scanlan and his team to help build the beings that will populate the many worlds of the film,
