“Napoleon” Production Designer Arthur Max and Set Decorator Elli Griff on Bringing Bonaparte’s World to Life
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon takes on the general-turned-emperor who ruled France from 1799 to 1814 and presents him (Joaquin Phoenix) as an indefatigable military strategist but also a tortured everyman obsessed with, and forever a touch spurned by, his wife and subsequent ex-wife, Joséphine (Vanessa Kirby). Running in the background of this love affair are Bonaparte’s imperial conquests, his catastrophic losses in Russia, and finally, his banishment to Elba.

“Napoleon” Costume Designers Janty Yates & David Crossman on Designing for Coronations and Conquests
A hat is merely a hat unless it’s a Napoleon Bonaparte hat, in which case the detailing and contours need to possess star quality equal to the man who made it famous. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon (in theaters now) casts Joaquin Phoenix as the world-conquering French commander, co-starring Vanessa Kirby as his un-adoring wife Josephine, and a series of scene-stealing “bi-corn” hats designed by David Crossman. An expert in military history, Crossman previously worked on World War 1 epic 1917 and more recently designed Robert Pattinson’s superhero suit in The Batman.
Final “Napoleon” Trailer Teases Ridley Scott’s Epic Take on the French Emperor’s Rise & Downfall
The final trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is here, giving us a last glimpse of his sweeping historical epic starring Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous French Emperor. Scott’s hugely ambitious take on a figure that filmmakers have been drawn to for decades has already earned its fair share of stellar reviews. “Scott has created an outrageously enjoyable cavalry charge of a movie, a full-tilt biopic of two and a half hours in which Scott doesn’t allow his troops to get bogged down mid-gallop in the muddy terrain of either fact or metaphysical significance,” writes the Guardian‘s Peter Bradshaw.

The review embargo has been lifted for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, the legendary director’s full-scale take on the life of one of history’s most infamous men. An epic of old-school filmmaking that boasts some of Napoleon’s most famous battles (including the Battle of Toulon and the Battle of Austerlitz), Scott’s film, from a script by David Scarpa, also pays close attention to the most crucial relationship in the French Emperor’s life—his lifelong love of Josephine—which was both a source of inspiration and comfort as well as torment.
New “Napoleon” Trailer Unleashes Ridley Scott’s Historical Epic
Warrior. Emperor. General. Genius. Tyrant. This is how a new Napoleon trailer describes the titular conqueror in Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical epic. Napoleon is played by Joaquin Phoenix—his second time playing an emperor for Scott—he first ruled the world as Roman Emperor Commodus in Scott’s 2000 epic Gladiator. “Scenes with him just felt really authentic,” co-star Vanessa Kirby has said about working with Phoenix, “he was unbelievable about capturing the idiosyncratic,
New “Napoleon” Video Reveals Joaquin Phoenix’s Approach to Taking on Historic Emperor
“Joaquin was just so incredible,” is how Vanessa Kirby succinctly sums up working alongside Joaquin Phoenix in a new video for Ridley Scott’s eagerly anticipated epic Napoleon. Phoenix plays the titular conquerer and eventual emperor of France —his second time playing an emperor, mind you—he first ruled the world as Roman Emperor Commodus in Scott’s 2000 epic Gladiator—as Scott takes us into the dangerous world of late 18th century France.
Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” Trailer Reveals Joaquin Phoenix as the French Conquerer
At last, the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated historical epic Napoleon has just charged into view. Scott’s sweeping look at the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix), one of the most iconic, singular conquerors and emperors the world has ever known, comes bearing the legendary director’s skills at old-school, large-scale filmmaking. As he did in Gladiator (2000), which featured Russell Crowe’s valiant general-turned-slave-turned-gladiator Maxiums seeking revenge against the cruel and petty tyrant-turned-emperor Commodus (played by none other than Joaquin Phoenix),
