Ari Aster’s Terrifying Midsommar Pulls Horror Into the Light

It was a safe bet that Ari Aster‘s follow-up to his terrifying 2018 debut Hereditary was going to be good. While the sophomore slump was once considered a very real phenomenon, it seemed unlikely that Aster would whiff with his next feature. The question was could he shock and terrify in a totally refreshing way after having done that, and more, with his nearly flawless debut? The answer seems to be a resounding yes.

Jordan Peele loved it, and now it seems others who have gotten an early look at Ari Aster‘s Midsommar agree—this film is a wicked, wild horror masterpiece. It’s also funny! Early reactions to Aster’s follow-up to his smashing, terrifying 2018 debut Hereditary are starting to surface online. The reactions are essentially raves. Aster seems to have pulled off the very tricky feat of nailing his second film.

If you’re getting to get praise from a fellow writer/director, Ari Aster truly couldn’t have done better than Get Out and Us mastermind Jordan Peele. Aster shocked the filmgoing world last year with his directorial debut Hereditary, and now he’s back with Midsommar. The former was a terrifying hellscape of shadows, miniatures, and the misery of cruel heritage, while the latter looks like a sunlight nightmare.

Thanks to Hereditary, I am still afraid that someone is floating in the corner of my room when I wake up in the night. It was the first movie that disturbed me on a visceral level as an adult. So, I am obviously ready to go back for seconds of whatever Ari Aster is serving up.

The next course he is dishing up is an unsettling cult nightmare called Midsommar.
