“Predator” Prequel Reveals Title & Release Window
As the Disney+ Day celebrations continue (the streaming service launched on this day, November 12, in 2019), one big reveal the studio has made has to do with the new Predator movie coming our way. Without further ado, we give you the prequel’s title—Prey—and its release date sometime in the summer of 2022 on Hulu. The film, which up until today had been called Skulls, will do something none of the Predator sequels and spinoffs have done—take us back to a time before the 1987 original.
The Cast of That Thing You Do is Reuniting for a COVID-19 Fundraiser
The spread of COVID-19 has been devastating in ways big and small, yet it has also brought out the best in people. While the virus has physically separated most of us, it has brought us together in appreciation (and, in some cities, nightly applause) for the astonishing courage and commitment of our healthcare professionals. COVID-19 has also managed to remind us that there are heroes all around us; the folks who work at our grocery stores,
Ad Astra‘s Second Trailer Reveals Brad Pitt’s Epic Sci-Fi Drama
Writer/director James Gray is a man who makes very good films, and he takes his time on each one. Two Lovers (2008), The Immigrant (2013) and The Lost City of Z (2016) couldn’t have been more different from one another, yet each bore the mark of Gray’s meticulous craft. With Ad Astra, which he co-wrote with Ethan Gross, Gray has turned his attention to the great beyond,
The First The King’s Man Teaser Trailer Reveals Kingsman Prequel
We’ve got our first look at director Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman prequel, cleverly titled The King’s Man, which takes us back before the venerable British spy agency was up and running. It’s something of a surprise to get a peek at The King‘s Man considering how quietly Vaughn and his team have been working on the prequel to his bonkers two previous films, 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle and his 2014 breakout hit Kingsman: The Secret Service.
Here’s Your First Look at Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story
There isn’t a genre that Steven Spielberg can’t tackle. The legendary director has worked in nearly every genre, save one. He’s delivered groundbreaking CGI spectacles from Jurassic Park to Ready Player One, and taut espionage thrillers like Bridge of Spies or Munich. He’s obviously a master of sci-fi (not only does Ready Player One qualify, but so does Close Encounters of the Third Kind,
How Rent: Live‘s Production Designer Created a 360-Degree World on Live TV
One of the most ambitious TV projects of this year that didn’t include CGI dragons and battles with ice zombies happened on Sunday night, January 27. This was the moment when Fox aired a live version of the iconic musical Rent. To call staging a live version of Rent on TV ambitious is probably underselling it. The musical, which focuses on seven artists living in New York City’s East Village in 1996,
How Dark Phoenix‘s Key Costumer Handled a Mutant Wardrobe
Co-writer and director Simon Kinberg’s Dark Phoenix was a very different kind of X-Men film for a variety of reasons. One is the fact that he removed X-Men from the title altogether. This was done to put the focus squarely on the troubled shoulders of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), whose evolution, so to speak, into the titular Dark Phoenix is the film’s central storyline. Yet despite removing the name of the mutant super-group from the title,
Watch Jean Grey Battle Magneto in Dark Phoenix Scene Breakdown
In the world of the X-Men, Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Professor X (James McAvoy) serve as mutant whisperers, only they do so to very different ends. For the good Professor, he teaches and counsels mutants, young and old, in an attempt to both nurture their gifts and make them respectable members of the community. For the often very bad Magneto, he takes in wayward mutants and nurtures their talents for chaos-making, enlisting them in his longstanding war with humanity.
Getting a Mutant Makeover With Dark Phoenix‘s Makeup Department Head
Dark Phoenix is the last film in the nearly two-decade-old X-Men franchise. Yet by dropping X-Men from the title, co-writer/director Simon Kinberg, one of the franchise’s most tenured creatives, put the focus squarely on Jean Grey (Sophie Turner). The film is centered on a space rescue mission gone horribly awry, and the resultant transformation of Jean Grey from an already potent member of the X-men into the titular cosmic force with nearly unimaginable powers.
New Dark Phoenix Clip Teases the X-Men’s Oldest Frenemies
If there were one relationship that has animated the X-Men franchise for nearly two decades, it would be between Charles Xavier and Magneto. In the first decade of the franchise, these two venerable mutants were portrayed by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, respectively. Charles, better known as Professor X, has long quarreled with Magneto about the best way to handle humanity’s distrust and hatred for the mutant kind. Charles believes they do that by respecting their laws and proving that mutants are people,
Jean Grey Breaks Bad in new Dark Phoenix Trailer
Daenerys Targaryen isn’t the only powerful women breaking bad these days. Over on the big screen, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones very own Sansa Stark!) is having a moment. The powerful telekinetic mutant and longstanding member of the X-Men (X-people) is headlining Simon Kinberg’s new film. This is so much Jean Grey’s film, they even dropped X-Men from the title. A new trailer brings us all the way back to the very first X-Men movie 20-years ago,
Watching The Orville’s Composer Conduct a Live Orchestra to Scenes From the Show
They look laid back in their shorts, tee shirts, and running shoes, but the Los Angeles musicians gathered in the cavernous Newman Scoring Stage on the Fox Lot snap to attention with astonishing precision once snowy-haired composer John Debney arrives. Debney’s on hand to conduct his music for Seth MacFarlane‘s sci-fi series The Orville. The Fox show, which concludes its second season today, Thursday, April 25, draws inspiration from vintage space dramas like Star Trek Voyager and counts on Debney to enhance the old-school vibe with his brawny brass and string music cues.
The Final Trailer for Dark Phoenix Gets Cosmic
“Ladies and gentleman of NASA, this is Charles Xavier. Help is on the way.”
While the X-Men have always done their level best to help humanity, the results rarely work in their favor. They’re still mistrusted, loathed and feared by millions. They’re forever battling a war of perceptions, if not actual wars —often against fellow mutants led by Magneto (Michael Fassbender). And now, in the case of Dark Phoenix, their best-laid plans to help save a crew of astronauts results in a game-changing metamorphosis for one of their own.
New Footage Highlights Dark Phoenix International Trailer
Last week’s Dark Phoenix trailer did something unexpected; it revealed the death of a major character. At least we were almost certain that the trailer showed Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique dying. Then co-writer/director Simon Kinberg confirmed it.
We get new footage in this international trailer without any major characters shockingly dying on us. This gives us a bit more of the story, including Jessica Chastain’s mysterious evil mentor character.
New Dark Phoenix Trailer Reveals Shocking Death of Beloved Character
You know from the opening seconds of the new Dark Phoenix trailer that Jean Grey (Sophie Turner)’s life is no longer totally her own. “Why did you make me do that” she weeps, speaking not so much to herself as to the Dark Phoenix force she now possesses. “She was my friend,” Jean cries. We then see Jean on the street being confronted, lovingly, by Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence.) Mystique tells Jean to focus on her voice.
New Dark Phoenix Poster Revealed Ahead of Trailer
While nearly all the focus in the superhero world has been mostly Captain Marvel-related, there’s another super powerful superhero ready to rise. Fox has released a new poster for writer/director Simon Kinberg’s Dark Phoenix, starring Sophie Turner as the X-Men’s most potent mutant, Jean Grey. The poster hints at Jean’s divided nature, between her controlled self and the uncontrollable Dark Phoenix force.
The two different looks include two specific callouts: on the left-hand side,
Alita: Battle Angel is Here to Challenge You
The casual audience-goer who might assume Alita: Battle Angel is a by-the-book female empowerment fare would be sorely mistaken. Alita is not in the same realm of female-protagonist led superhero movies like Patty Jenkins’ juggernaut Wonder Woman. Alita promises to be a different kind of narrative altogether.
A Different Kind of Superhero
Rather than providing audiences with a normalized baseline human point of view – for example,
How Russell Hornsby Prepared for Emotional Role of Starr’s Dad in The Hate U Give
The Hate U Give takes no time to build up to the powerful message it delivers. The film opens on one of its most important and intimate scenes. A father, tough and terrified, lectures his seemingly too young kids on how to interact with police officers. Their mother tries to temper his tone, but he knows his children are entering a world where he is running out of time to protect them. Russell Hornsby offers a raw portrayal of a private moment every parent wishes they didn’t have to have.
A Round-Up of Some of the Wonderful Stan Lee Tributes
The world mourns the passing of the great Stan Lee. It would be hard to overstate the impact this gentle giant has had on pop culture. Since he first put pen to paper, alongside ace collaborators at Marvel like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, Lee created many of the superheroes that now dominate the film world. The Avengers, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, the Hulk,
Rami Malek on his Transformation into Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody
Music reviewers ridiculed Queen’s ostentatious and bombastic song “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the 70s, yet the song went on to become one of the most iconic (and unusual) rock anthems of all time. Now, in Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek’s interpretation of Freddie Mercury is intoxicating, thanks to a huge amount of research, a movement coach, and Malek’s go-for-broke attempt to conjure one of the most original, talented frontmen in rock history.
