T2: Trainspotting Drops New Trailer

While today's film news is understandably going to be dominated by the Oscar nominations, for a look ahead at what to get excited about in 2017, we point you towards Danny Boyle's return to the material that made his name. Yup, we're talking about T2: Trainspotting, folks, and we're excited. The gang is back; Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) reunites with Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) as the old friends (and, at times, frenemies) return to the only place they've ever called home.

While the exact plot details of the film have been kept largely under wraps, you can guess that these aging former drug addicts are going to be reckoning with a lot of regret. Sony Pictures' official synopsis states: "Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance."

The new trailer gives Renton's classic narration from the original a timely tweak. It used to go like this: “Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin can openers.” Now, that rant has been updated for out times:  "Choose life…chose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and hope that someone, somewhere cares." 

There's hardly been a better time for a sequel than this one at this time. In our panopticon era where everyone's perpetually watching each other and themselves, projecting their every thought and feeling into the world on social media, who better to bring us back down into the muck, into the here and now, than these guys. As the trailer shows, age hasn't mellowed them at all. Thank God for that.

T2 Trainspotting will get an exclusive release on March 17, going wide on March 31.
