Blake Lively v. Great White in new The Shallows Trailer
The name of the game in The Shallows is self reliance. Ralph Waldo Emerson himself would likely agree that Nancy (Blake Lively) is the epitome of it. A strong, smart and resilient young woman who will need to summon everything she has to survive her predicament. This new trailer focuses on the film's central, intriguingly simple premise; Nancy is out surfing when she's separated from the beach (which is not more than 200 yards away) by a great white. The problem is, a great white can swim 100 yards in 8 seconds.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop, Run All Night), The Shallows hopes to do for near shore shark terror what Jaws did for, well, near and off shore shark terror. But the clever twist here is to approach the shark-terrorizes-people genre more as a psychological thriller than a horror. How can Nancy buy enough time to swim to shore? How does someone stuck on a rock off a secluded, rarely visited beach get help? And, failing all that, how can someone without any weapons kill a great white if necessary?
You'll have to see The Shallows to find out. It lurks into theaters on June 24.
