The 1st Assassin’s Creed Trailer is Here

Director Justin Kurzel and star Michael Fassbender are as good a combo as you could ask to bring a beloved video game to the big screen and do it justice. And now with the first trailer for Assassin's Creedwe're finally getting a peek at their take on the game series. To be technical, Assassin’s Creed isn’t actually a direct adaptation of any one of the games, but rather a separate narrative that will exist in the same universe but live as a companion piece. Fassbender plays a modern man named Callum Lynch who finds himself in a kind of post-life prison, where powerful players reveal to him that he’s descended from a long line of Assassins, a secret organization that has been at war with the Templars, a rival group, for centuries. What do they want from him? His past. So this swords-and-sandals story is actually a genre mash-up, because Lynch finds that, with their technology, he can access his "genetic memories" and essentially become Aguilar, his 15th century ancestor (and deadly assassin), and go about his bloody work in Spain—during the Spanish Inquisition, no less.

Okay, now that you've got the boiler plate, it's time to watch the trailer and see how you feel:

You know you're in different cinematic territory when a historical action/sci-fi film's trailer has a Kanye West song. You also know that Fassbender is giving his all to this role—he's not only a producer, he's also already thinking of the sequels. Plus, Kurzwel directed him in last year's bloody, brilliant Macbethso the two clearly have chemistry. And then there's the supporting cast; Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson. We're labeling this promising. What are your thoughts?

Assassin's Creed comes out on December 21.
