X-Men: Apocalypse – Becoming Cyclops

So how did Scott Summers become Cyclops? In X-Men: Apocalypse we get to meet a lot of the most iconic mutants as they're just blossoming (or mutating, as it were). For Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), as it's been for many mutants, his transition is pretty brutal.

If you remember some mutant origin stories from the past, they're typically hideously traumatic. Rogue just wanted to kiss her boyfriend, and in doing so she put him in a coma. Wolverine killed his birth father. Angel mutilated himself so his father wouldn't see his wings. While these origins stories have been reshuffled a bit after Days of Future Past, they still point to how X-Men has always treated their characters coming of age as traumatic experiences that marked them for life. So it's fitting that when Cyclops discovers his abilities, it's distressing and violent…although, who didn't want to unleash hell on a bully back in high school?
