The First Captain America: Civil War Trailer is a Superhero Brawl
The first trailer for Captain America: Civil War debuted during Jimmy Kimmel last night (in the midst of his Star Wars week, giving Disney a nice one-two marketing punch) and it begins exactly where the teaser during Ant-Man's credit sequence left us, with Cap (Chris Evans) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) interrogating the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Only it quickly escalates into a colossal clash between superheroes in what looks to continue Captain America's hold as the most emotional of Marvel's many running franchises.
As always, we'll let you watch the trailer first before we dive into any thoughts on it. Here you go:
True to it's title, Captain America: Civil War gives us former allies, even friends, fighting one another over watch each believes to be the just cause. The Cap films have become, perhaps more so than any other in Marvel's growing canon, the most concerned with our real world. The Winter Soldier was a surprisingly nuanced look at the surveillance state, and it's titular villain turned out to be (spoiler alert) Cap's old WWII buddy, Bucky Barnes, now brainwashed and retrofitted with a mean metal fist (as well as the same super strength they gave Cap). In Civil War, Bucky has given up being a villain, and Cap and Falcon seem willing to risk their lives to defend him against the government types (lead by William Hurt's head honcho) and Tony Stark's Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), who are leading the charge for new rules and regulations—and a superhero registration that sounds downright Trump-ian.
For you Marvel heads out there, go ahead and re-watch the thing so you can catch all the intra-Marvel fighting: At 1:46 you find Iron Man and War Machine (Don Cheadle) fighting against Cap, Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). At 1:51 you get a blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse of the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), and at 1:59 it's Bucky grabbing onto, and possibly ripping out, Tony Stark’s arc reactor.
