Matt Reeves The Batman to Turn Glasgow Into Gotham
Nearly all of the news we’ve been hearing about Matt Reeves upcoming The Batman has revolved around the superb cast. We’ve known for a long time that the new caped crusader would be played by Robert Pattinson, and since, then, an excellent supporting cast has been growing around him. Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot (better known as the Penguin), and Andy Serkis as Alfred. Now, according to the Daily Record, the city of Glasgow will have its own role to play; it’ll double as Gotham City.
According to the Daily Record‘s sources, the Scottish city will be home to at least a chunk of the production when The Batman begins filming this February. “A source said: ‘Glasgow will be turned into Gotham City and, with the city’s architecture, it’s expected to look great in the new film.'” The story goes on to mention other major film productions that have turned Glasgow into other cities, such as when David Fincher’s World War Z transformed Scotland’s biggest city into Philadelphia.
While Gotham is DC Comics version of New York City, past Batman films have utilized a host of various locations to bring Gotham City to life. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy doubled New York, of course, but also Pittsburgh, London, Los Angeles, and Chicago, to name just a few locations, to create his vision of one of the most iconic locations in the entire superhero canon.
While there’s been no official announcement on exactly where The Batman will do the bulk of its filming, one could see Reeves choosing a different city from those that Nolan used for his trilogy. The Batman will be a very different film, in which Reeves has promised more of a detective noir story than a standard superhero tentpole film. Glasgow would be a great place to double for Gotham, offering a different feel from what Nolan and others have done in the past.
The Batman is due in theaters on June 25, 2021.
