Here’s Why Thanos was Able to Destroy Cap’s Shield in Avengers: Endgame
When Captain America wielded Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and started beating the holy hell out of Thanos at the end of Avengers: Endgame, things were looking pretty good for the Avengers. Then Thanos does the unthinkable; he uses his massive sword and starts slicing huge chunks out of Cap’s supposedly invincible Vibranium shield. Say what?
It turned out that Vibranium could be bested, apparently, by whatever the heck Thanos’ sword was made from. Now we have it on good authority—director Joe Russo and screenwriters Stephen McFeely—that this is because there are even stronger metals out there in the great big universe. On the juicy commentary track on the Blu-ray, McFeely reveals that not only are the stronger metals in the universe than Vibranium, but that what Thanos is wielding isn’t even a proper sword:
“You can also see that while Vibranium is the strongest substance on Earth, whatever Thanos’ straight razor there is made out of is stronger.”
A straight razor! Joe Russo also told Comicbook.com that it would make sense that Thanos would have a more powerfully made weapon than Cap’s shield:
“Clearly Thanos is a thousand-year-old character who has fought everyone in the universe and is the greatest: He’s the Genghis Khan of the universe, so he would have the greatest weapon. He knows of Eitri, he’s been to Eitri to have his glove created. Did he have them create his blade as well? Potentially. But it’s interesting that it could destroy the shield.”
Thanks to the assorted Avengers, Thanos and his stronger-than-Vibranium straight razor are dust. Yet this being the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can be sure another supervillain will come along, and will likely be even more powerful than the Mad Titan. Thanos can’t be the only bad guy to know that they make great weapons in Eitri.
