The First The King’s Man Teaser Trailer Reveals Kingsman Prequel
We’ve got our first look at director Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman prequel, cleverly titled The King’s Man, which takes us back before the venerable British spy agency was up and running. It’s something of a surprise to get a peek at The King‘s Man considering how quietly Vaughn and his team have been working on the prequel to his bonkers two previous films, 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle and his 2014 breakout hit Kingsman: The Secret Service.
The King’s Man takes us back to the origins of the secret service agency and boasts another stellar cast. You won’t see the familiar faces from the last two installments—goodbye Colin Firth and Taron Egerton—but we’ve got a bunch of great actors stepping into new roles. The story revolves around “a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions,” per the logline. This seems to suggest that World War I itself was the impetus for creating the Kingsman, with that terrible war being the brainchild of a few horrible individuals, forcing a righteous secret organization to rise up and fight them.
Ralph Fiennes headlines here in what appears to be the Firth role, while Harris Dickinson plays the fresh-faced new recruit, which is more or less the Egerton role. The look of The King’s Man is striking, much more of a war film that Vaughn’s previous two, Bond-like spy romps. For those of you chomping at the bit for one more film with the former cast, Vaughn has said there will be a Kingsman 3 at some point. For now, however, The King’s Man looks like an intriguing addition to his bold, budding franchise.
Joining Fiennes and Dickinson are Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou, and Charles Dance.
