Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month comes to a close this Saturday, and just a week later the 50th anniversary of the first march from Selma to Montgomery, an event that shocked the nation and came to be known as "Bloody Sunday," will be commemorated in Selma on March 7 (a moment so brilliantly conveyed in Ava DuVernay's Selma, one of the films on our list). From World War II to the Civil Rights movement, we've looked at eight moments, and the films they inspired, that helped shaped our nation.

Of course there have been countless films that have tried to capture the courage of African Americans and their supporters during their long, arduous fight for their rights. In the past we've looked at important documentaries (check out our list of five must-see docs right here), and had film historians schooled us on the landscape of cinema during the Civil Rights era. For today's celebration of Black History month, we put together the below infographic with an eye towards including both documentaries and adaptations of real events.
