Are the Avengers Reassembling for the Oscars?
What will it take to bring back our beloved, fallen Avengers after the now infamous Thanos snap? If you’re thinking it’s Captain Marvel, you might be right about how things shake out in Avengers: Endgame, but it looks like we’ll be seeing them a whole lot sooner—at the Oscars. The Hollywood Reporter has it that the Oscars producers are looking to bring back the Avengers for the telecast (there will be no host this year), which airs on February 24. There will be a rotating cast of stars introducing the show’s many segments, and reassembling the Avengers to introduce one of them sounds like a pretty savvy move.
As THR points out, this wouldn’t be the first time the Avengers took to the Oscar stage—after the mega success of the first Avengers film in 2012, the 2013 Oscars telecast brought Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jeremy Renner out on stage together. Yet that was then, when the entire Avengers team was relatively small. To think, we greeted the arrival of Joss Whedon’s sprawling epic wondering how he’d fit all these characters—and the stars that play them—into a single movie. Now, the Avengers include the characters from Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man—to say nothing of the characters without their own franchises, like Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are also a part of the team. The cast of Avengers: Infinity War was so big it doubled the number of Avengers that were in Age of Ultron, which itself was much bigger than the first film.
Anyway. The Academy hasn’t commented about the possibility of resurrecting our fallen heroes (and assembling the survivors) for the Oscars, but THR reports that the stars were pointedly asked to not present at the Golden Globes so that their potential appearance at the Oscars would make a bigger splash.
While Thanos rules over the MCU, in the real world, the stars of the Avengers still burn bright.
