Todd Phillips Shares a Final Photo From Joker as Filming Wraps
It’s official—Todd Phillips Joker has wrapped production. The very intriguing stand-alone film starring Joaquin Phoenix as Gotham’s most iconic villain began filming three months ago, and throughout the process, Phillips has shared a few choice photos from set. We got a glimpse of Phoenix in a full clown suit, and Zazie Beetz in her largely unknown role, and the very first image which showed Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. Now Phillips has shared a photo of himself on the last day of filming.
Warner Bros. has to be feeling pretty good right about now. They’ve got Aquaman hitting theaters this Friday surrounded by a ton of positive buzz, the result (in part, at least) of giving director James Wan full reign to take the underwater epic where his vision and passion led him. If the same creative freedom was given to Phillips, and one imagines it was, Joker has the chance to be as winningly singular. Phillips and his creative team have been clear from the start that they wanted Joker to be a lower-budget (in superhero film terms) film that focused on a grittier Gotham and the twisted soul it helped shape. The Joker is one of the most iconic villains of all time, and while it’s tough to imagine anyone topping Heath Ledger’s turn as the Clown Prince in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Phoenix is an immensely talented performer who will make the role his own. There’s plenty of reasons to be excited about this one.
The script comes from Phillips and Scott Silver (The Fighter). The cast is stellar; joining Phoenix and Beetz are Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Shea Whigham, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Douglas Hodge, Josh Pais, and Brett Cullen.
Joker opens in theaters on October 4, 2019.
