Captain Marvel Takes Flight in More Ways than One in New Trailer
We are feeling more hopeful about the fate of the Avengers than ever with the release of a new Captain Marvel trailer. The new look reveals more about who Carol Danvers is, how she gained her powers, and just exactly what she can do. The film will take us back to 1995, but there are large-scale implications here of how she will fit into the rest of the MCU.
There is an intergalactic war raging between the Krees (good guys) and Skrulls (bad guys). When Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) meets Danvers, she is fighting with the Krees. That kindly looking mature lady sitting on the train we saw in the first trailer is confirmed to be a Skrull in disguise, and we get to see how that fight scene plays out (hint; Captain Marvel wins).
Annette Bening appears as a yet unnamed Kree leader who holds part of the answers to Danvers’ past. Although she doesn’t remember, she was once a human on Earth and it is implied that the Krees saved and transformed her after a near-fatal plane crash. Probably not the exact crash that is shown in the trailer, though, as her nose is bleeding green. Apparently, the conflict has led her back to her home planet where she has no interest in playing nice for a lengthy battle. She’s here to end this thing.
Jude Law’s mysterious character Mar-Vell only shows up long enough to insult Danvers—okay, perhaps it’s more like tough love. We still do not know exactly who he’s playing, but he tells her she’s not as strong as she thinks. Yeah, we think you’re wrong about that. She honestly shows no weaknesses. She is confident and self-possessed, proves she can fly a fighter jet (even though she’s not sure how she has that skill), and then she powers up and blasts into space leaving a trail of flames and electricity. Come on, she can just blast herself into space!
Although we are going back in time, Captain Marvel is sure to have implications for the future. Yesterday’s poster release alluded to some of the powers that Danvers flexes in the new trailer. Her abilities by far seem to outclass even the other Avengers, which bodes well for saving them. Take any of the Avengers who can fly (Thor, Iron Man, Vision, Falcon) and give them even more power, and that’s more or less what this Captain Marvel trailer is hinting at with this final sequence in space. Plus, she already has experience putting alien jerks in their place. Watch out, Thanos.
