Miles Learns how to Sling Webs in new Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Clip
Perhaps you’ve heard that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is being hailed as the best animated movie of the year and possibly the best Spider-Man film ever? Yeah, people are enthused about this film. In a new clip released by Sony Pictures, you can get a fresh glimpse at the gloriously lush animation, the humor, and the joy of watching the newbie Spider-Man, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), get some life lessons from his mentor, Peter Parker (Jake Johnson). Peter is giving Miles a bit of Web-Slinging 101 here, helping the youngster learn how to effectively avoid killing himself via falling to his death. There’s also an issue of furious scientists and their pesky laser guns.
The set up for the extended scene is this: Miles and Peter break into the nefarious Alchemax corporation, but it’s hard for them to blend in considering they’re wearing their bright red and blue Spider suits. Peter casually grabbing a bagel doesn’t quite do the job. Once the chase is on, Miles is trying to learn how to harness the power of his webs, but his mentor is…lacking some fundamental teaching skills. Peter’s a “learn by doing” kind of guy, even if that doing might splat Miles against a tree (which is exactly what happens). The big moment comes when Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld, who will be getting her own movie!) appears, taking an already delightful clip and jacking it up a few dozen notches. She’s from another dimension. Or, as she puts it, “another another dimension.”
The clip is a snapshot of what the larger film offers—the lush animation style, the thrill of a truly fresh take on a beloved character, the witty banter, and the great little comic touches, like the way Peter finally gets Miles into web-slinging form by having him actually say thwip, the sound the webs make when shot, with the word appearing on screen. The same thing happens when Miles throws a bagel at one of the scientists and the word “bagel!” pops up.
The cast is excellent; joining Moore, Johnson, and Steinfeld are John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Liev Schreiber, Luna Lauren-Valez, and Lily Tomlin.
Into the Spider-Verse is directed by Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians), Bob Perschietti (writer of The Little Prince), and Rodney Rothman (writer of 22 Jump Street), and written by The Lego Movie‘s Phil Lord and produced by his filmmaking partner Chris Miller.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens in theaters on December 14th.
