Disney Reveals the Exact Year We Will Meet Captain Marvel
The Marvel films have definitely not been released in chronological order. You would need a handy guide like this one to truly watch them as they actually occurred. Even then, there are few spots that are hazy. What’s finally clear is exactly when Captain Marvel will take place. Sure, it’s the 1990s, but which year of that decade?
Ok, it’s clear if you can read Japanese. I cannot, but I am trusting Google translation. Disney’s Japanese page announces that Captain Marvel will be set in 1995. Brad Pitt was People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, everyone was doing the Macarena, and Carol Danvers was battling Skrulls. Those first two things will probably not come up in the movie, but Blockbuster video does.
The page refers often to her having lost her memory, which is likely alluding to her being unfamiliar with her history as a pilot on Earth seen in the trailer. Captain Marvel is jumping way back, but it will certainly not be the first film in the MCU chronology. Captain America: The First Avenger will still beat it by a half-century starting back in the 1940s. All of the other films have been set in 2005 or later, so Captain Marvel will land at a distant 2nd. Interestingly, the page also calls Captain Marvel the story that “triggered the birth of the Avengers.” That’s nearly two decades before we saw the Avengers unite on screen in 2012. It will be interesting to see just what influence she has on Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the future of the Avengers.
There must be some key information that will be uncovered decades ago. It is important enough to roll back the clock to introduce Danvers. We also know that she will have a critical role in defeating Thanos as she was the last call Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) made before turning to dust. Unless, of course, she has been snapped away too. Now that would be a seriously unexpected twist.
Captain Marvel lands March 8.
