Star Trek Getting an Animated Makeover from Rick and Morty Writer
The most delightfully nerdy event in the nerdy history of Star Trek may be what nerded today. CBS All Access has picked up two seasons of a new animated series call Star Trek: Lower Decks. As the title may imply, the stars of the series will be the most mundane among the ship. Rick and Morty writer and Star Trek superfan, Mike McMahan, will helm the project, which all but guarantees it will be seriously funny.
“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every ‘Trek’ episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of ‘Trek’ to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”
There is a certain kind of brilliance that looks at the high tech, futuristic world of Star Trek and realizes there has to be someone around that keeps this place going. The blue-collar workers of the Starship Enterprise will finally get their moment of glory. Without them, Captain Kirk would have been lost in space long ago. If McMahan is already thinking about the food replication cubes, this is sure to be a witty and cerebral show. Brush up on all of your Star Trek knowledge or you may be destined to miss some of the funniest jokes.
“As a life-long Trekkie, it’s a surreal and wonderful dream come true to be a part of this new era of ‘Star Trek. While Star Trek: Lower Decks is a half-hour, animated show at its core, it’s undeniably ‘Trek’ – and I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program,” McMahan joked.
McMahan previously professed his love of Star Trek in fictionalized tweets about Star Trek: The Next Generation’s nonexistent 8th season. He later made it into a more official project for Simon & Schuster. McMahan also wrote one of the four short stories for Star Trek: Short Treks.
CBS is bulking up their Star Trek library to draw more fans to All Access, and it’s a Trekkie paradise. The platform will also host Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Short Treks, and an untitled project in which Sir Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard. With all of that to watch, you’ll never have to leave the NCC-1701 again.
