Wonder Woman 1984 Returns to Its Original Release Date
While Wonder Woman fans are surely going to argue with this fact, it’s likely very good news that Wonder Woman 1984‘s release has been pushed back 8 months. Patty Jenkins’ follow has been slated for a November 1, 2019 premiere, but has now been moved back to June 5, 2020. Diana Prince herself Gal Gadot shared the news on Twitter:

When Jenkins’ juggernaut original Wonder Woman bowed in 2017, it was on June 2, and the film went on to become the most successful and beloved of all the recent DC Films releases. By pushing Wonder Woman 1984 back to its original June release date, Warner Bros. and DC are giving Jenkins and her team more time to fine-tune their film, and, keeping it as a start-of-summer blockbuster rather than dropping it in the midst of Holiday season 2019. Warner Brothers. president of domestic distribution, Jeff Goldstein, released this statement via press release:
“We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.”
This will also give Wonder Woman 1984 some breathing room from Todd Phillips Joker, which will open on October 4, 2019, and is a very different kind of DC film. It seems right to keep as much room between Joaquin Phoenix’s deranged clown prince of chaos and Gadot’s virtuous, iconic Wonder Woman as possible, and, serves to soothe any potential superhero fatigue you might get from two DC Films releases only weeks apart.
Yes, we’d all like to see Wonder Woman 1984 as soon as possible, but there are few people you’d rather start your summer with than Diana Prince.
Joining Gadot are Chris Pine, returning as Steve Trevor, Connie Nielsen, returning as Hippolyta, Robin Wright, returning as Antiope, and newcomer Kristen Wiig as the supervillainess Cheetah.
