The Solo: A Star Wars Story Cast On What It’s Like to Jump into Hyperspace

In the fall of 2019, Star Wars fans will have the opportunity to climb into the Millenium Falcon cockpit and try their hand at flying like Han in Disney World. Until then, we’ll have to take the cast of Solo’s word for it that it’s incredibly awesome. The special effects team actually built the Star Wars ride of our dreams for the infamous Kessel Run scene. i09 has an exclusive featurette from the Solo: A Star Wars Story home video release where the cast recalls filming on board the ship.

Although we have seen many instances of hyperspace throughout the Star Wars series, this moment captures Han’s first experience and one that becomes legendary. VFX Supervisor Rob Bredow confirms our wildest hopes that the actors actually were inside the cockpit of the Falcon seeing what we see when the scene was filmed.

The masters at Industrial Light Magic actually created the space scenery you see flying by to wrap around the vessel. The actors were not flying in front of a green screen, as I assumed. They actually got to see the ship take off into hyperspace in real time. Even more mind-blowing, the screens were playing during filming and that’s what we ultimately see. For anyone who has ever tried to take a picture of their computer screen, you know that there can be a lot of interference. These guys truly are wizards.

The focus of the featurette is the awesome set design that produced that iconic moment. And yet there are so many cool behind the scenes things to catch here. Phoebe Waller-Bridge performed the role of L3-37 in motion capture and her costume is so cool to see. The before and after really show off the incredible VFX work that went into this film. There are so many things they accomplished and transforming the actress into a robot is an excellent one.

Waller-Bridge is all of us letting go and having a Star Wars fan moment. “Going into hyperspace was probably the coolest moment,” Waller-Bridge said. “You know you’re an adult. You know it’s not real, but you press this lever and the stars came and we both just went, ‘Ahhh!’” Our sentiments exactly.
