Does This new Video From Spider-Man: Far From Home Tease Villain Hydro-Man?
We don’t know much about Spider-Man: Far From Home. The Sony-produced Marvel story is, like Marvel Studios productions themselves, being kept tightly under wraps. We know the film will find Peter Parker abroad (hence the title), likely in London. We know that the cast includes Spider-Man: Homecoming standouts Zendaya, as Peter’s love interest Michelle Jones, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Michael Keaton as Vulture. Newcomers include J.B. Smoove, Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives Nick Fury and Maria Hill, respectively, and the unconfirmed rumor that Jake Gyllenhaal will play—possibly—the supervillain Mysterio. Filming is currently underway, and most of the news from the set we’ve gotten comes from star Tom Holland, who took to Instagram to share this video that sponsors a charitable campaign, with donations going to The Brothers Trust and Edward Charles Foundation.
The video has Marvel-heads speculating that Spider-Man villain Hydro-Man will be Spidey’s true antagonist in Far From Home. The reason is that Holland’s stunt double can be seen getting crushed by a blast of water. Who else could marshall such liquid force? You could argue Aquaman, but that’s an entirely separate universe of superheroes, and as we all know, Marvel and DC shall never meet.
Hydro-Man, aka Morris Bench, was created by Dennis O’Neil and artist John Romita, Jr. back in 1981. His water-based superpowers were instigated by Spidey, who knocked him into the ocean during his battle with Namor. It happened that an experimental generator was being tested in the part of the sea (what are the odds?) and the result was that Bench harnassed the ability to manipulate water.
Does a single shot of a stuntman getting blasted by water indicate that Hydro-Man might be a part of Far From Home? We’ve heard crazier rumors that turned out to be true, and those didn’t even come with video evidence.
Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5, 2019.
