SDCC 2018: Favorite Beasts and a Long-Awaited Friend Appear in New Fantastic Beasts Trailer
Dumbledore has a particular penchant for sending proteges into the line of danger. Long before Harry was sent to fight Voldemort, Newt Scamander was the chosen one. Before he was headmaster, Dumbledore was a mere professor teaching schoolkids the Boggart-Banishing spell. As Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) and his followers begin to unite, Dumbledore (Jude Law) implores Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to fight in the new Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer.
Luckily for the wizarding world, Newt is up to the task. While others wizards may be averse to basilisks, dementors or the dark arts, Newt Scamander has a much more familiar fear to us muggles. Being fated with a desk job. Fair enough. Carrying a magical zoo in your briefcase will definitely keep you out of the office.
The Crimes of Grindelwald seems more perilous in nearly every way, with the exception of the return of Newt’s extraordinary animals. Joy of all joys, the way-too-cute niffler has returned. Never has there been a more adorable pick pocket. Less cuddly, but far more majestic is a fabulous feathered lion like creature among some other intriguing specimens.
Grindelwald’s persuasion extends far beyond Credence (Ezra Miller). He is able to capture the rapt attention of an entire audience. Luckily, Newt has backup of his own. In addition to Dumbledore, Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol), and muggle Jacob (Alison Sudol) are all right behind him.
It is still unclear why a magizoologist is uniquely equipped for this fight, but it might have something to do with Grindelwald’s own use of animals. Like a dark carriage pulled by flying horses being his preferred mode of transportation. Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz) makes her stunning debut and diagnosis the root of Newt’s problems. His heart is too kind for this world. Hopefully there are some secret weapons in Newt’s bag, because this is turning into an all-out war.
The greatest surprise, of course comes at the end. A character we have been waiting to meet since the first Harry Potter book is finally revealed. Alchemist Nicolas Flamel (Brontis Jodorowsky) joins the battle. Although brittle, he is an incredible thinker and made the all-important discovery of the sorcerer’s stone. For some of us who have been lifelong Wizarding World devotees, we’ve been literally waiting our entire life for this moment.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald flies into theaters November 16.
