Jude Law Says Dumbledore and Grindelwald Will Not Come Face to Face in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Fantastic Beasts star Jude Law spilled some information about his role as young Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald. He shared a wide range of tidbits from Dumbledore’s sexuality to which other Harry Potter stars he will share the screen with in the upcoming HP franchise spinoff.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Law joked that it’s quite comical that he’s playing the role of “young” Albus, given that at his current age of 45, he feels like he’s going through more of a mid-life crisis. However, he’s quite excited to hold onto his youth for just a bit longer. Looking good, Jude!
The most telling news from Law’s interview with EW, is that revelation that Dumbledore and Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) will not actually interact with each other in any upcoming scenes. It seems as if Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) will be handling the heavy lifting. Here’s what Law had to say:
I don’t actually have any scenes with Johnny. As I said before, this is only Part 2 of a longer story. I’ve always admired him from afar, but we don’t know each other, and I’ve not yet met him on this. In many ways that suits the relationship as it’s been many years since they’ve seen each other. So there’s complexity in that that’s fun to mine. Again, the past will reveal itself.
Given their shaky past they may have involved romantic sparks, we expected to see the two most powerful wizards meet. Law’s answer douses the final flame on any hope of seeing that famous Elder Wand duel in Crimes of Grindelwald.
Law also provided some clarification on Dumbledore’s sexuality. Earlier this year, in another interview with EW, director David Yates said that Dumbledore’s character will not be “explicitly gay” in the upcoming film. This earlier statement created confusion and controversy. However, Law confirmed from his meeting with author and screenwriter JK Rowling that indeed he’s gay. Law asserted that Dumbledore’s sexuality most does not define the character adding, “He’s multifaceted.” He continues to excite us saying that this film is only the beginning.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald hits theaters November 16.
