Kevin Feige Reveals how They Decided Which Avengers Would Survive Infinity War
The snap heard around the world changed everything. Marvel fans left Avengers: Infinity War shocked, trying to wrap their heads around why so many of their favorite characters had been killed—and how in the world Marvel would deal with those deaths in their upcoming slate of movies. Although before the release of Infinity War, the directors of the film, the Russo brothers, let us know that no character was safe, it was still shocking to see so many classic superheroes killed off, specially characters with their own franchises. Spider-Man? Black Panther? Doctor Strange? Spare a thought for the other Marvel characters who also bit the dust (literally); beloved-but-often-bad Loki (Tom Hiddleston), noble Heimdall (Idris Elba), the wonderful Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and the brilliant Vision (Paul Bettany).
But Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, did give us a little teaser about why the remaining characters still stand. And it makes sense. He told io9, “I think for a film series that is going on 10 years and is gearing towards a conclusion with Avengers 4¸ which you don’t usually have in these kind of movies, you can sort of do the math and realize it’s the original Avengers that are left.” So there we have it, the answer we all sort of assumed but now have from the head of Marvel Studios himself. This incarnation of the Avengers series seems to be coming to a wrap, and it is our original crew, which include Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, and Hawkeye (wherever he is) that still stand as we approach the fourth sequel.
Although we may not know exactly how Avengers 4 will play out, Feige’s hint gave us two probable outcomes. One explanation is that Marvel wants the original squad to band together one last time to take on Thanos and reverse the terrible outcome of Infinity War. Another possibility has us questioning whether there is something much bigger at stake. There is speculation of a “cosmic fate that binds these characters together and will be tested moving ahead,” io9 writes. It’s possible that the core Avengers team sacrifices themselves (perhaps save Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, who has her own film coming up) to get back those we lost. We won’t know until next may, when Avengers 4 comes out and finally puts to bed all the questions Infinity War has begged.
