Avengers: Infinity War Cast Didn’t Know About Ending Until Day of Shooting

We’ve written a lot about the infamous ending to Avengers: Infinity War, but this might be the wildest thing we’ve heard yet. Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) was at Ace Comic-Con in Seattle this past weekend and revealed that the cast had no idea about how the film would end until the day of filming. Olsen and her fellow cast mates were told by the Russo Brothers—while they were all stuffed into a van (H/t ScreenRant):

“I found out from the Russos exactly what was going to happen and it wasn’t until we shot it on that day we learned what the ending was. They took us into a van – all of us – we were in a van with air conditioning because it was very hot and they told us how the movie was going to end and no one knew. And they were like ‘Now we’re shooting it, Go!’ and we were like ‘How are we supposed to interpret that?’”

Infinity War presented many challenges to its cast, including keeping a very tight grip on their scripts. None of the actors were allowed to take their scripts home to learn their lines. Instead, because of game-changing, explosive nature of the ending, they had to read the script in a windowless room, leaving their phone outside. What’s more, the scripts they read had fake endings and several purposefully misleading parts, ensuring that the now legendary Thanos snap wasn’t leaked, accidentally or otherwise.

While the rest of the world was watching in horror and shock as many of their favorite characters were turned into dust, the actors themselves were likely just as stunned. You try to pulling off a heartbreaking death scene only moments after finding out your character was going to die to in the first place.

If only there was a photo of the massive cast in a single van finding out their fates—that would be nearly as iconic as the ending itself.
