The New Mission: Impossible – Fallout Trailer is Pure Adrenalin

You will likely not see a more kinetic, viscerally intense trailer this year. Topping the action from the previous installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise is both as sure and seemingly impossible a thing as death itself. After Ghost Protocol, when Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise, of course) went Spider-Man outside of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building, and ran across the glass face of the building a mile and a half above ground, it seemed like the unbeatable stunt. But then, in Rogue Nation, Cruise boarded a plane—mid takeoff—in the craziest stunt we’d ever seen. Now for Fallout, Cruise trained for a year for the film’s signature stunt, a psychotic helicopter chase in which the star is actually piloting his own chopper. Cruise’s go-to stunt coordinator, Wade Eastwood, told us that the actor’s death-defying feats (brilliantly planned and managed by Eastwood’s team so death remains unlikely) are always about giving the audience more. “He wants to feel it himself, he wants to be scared to death himself, so that that will translate to the audience,” Eastwood said. The official trailer for Fallout is just about nonstop Cruise feeling scared to death, and it’s fantastic. Fallout is one of the films we’re most excited about this year.

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie becomes the first director in the franchise to repeat, after delivering a nervy, passionate story with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. That film gave us one of the franchise’s most chilling villains, Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), and his capture at the end of Rogue Nation allowed Hunt and his team to finally breathe. Not for long. Lane breaks free in Paris, and he’s dead set on making Hunt pay by losing the people most precious to him. Lane’s not the only ruthless adversary in Fallout—Superman himself, Henry Cavill, looks absolutely at home playing the bruising assassin August Walker. Cavill was always at his best in Batman v Superman and Justice League when Superman was angry, and here he gets to use his considerable physical presence to go toe-to-toe with Cruise’s Hunt, and the results look both brutal and satisfying.

As always, the ensemble is fantastic. Returning stars include the great Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Alec Baldwin. New to the cast is the legendary Angela Bassett. This is all lining up quite nicely.

The trailer functions not only as a thrilling glimpse at what could possibly be the best installment in the now iconic franchise, but as a joyous celebration of old fashioned movie making, focusing on practical effects, eye popping stunts and star power.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout opens in theaters on July 27th.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
