Thanos Hopes Survivors Remember Their Fallen Heroes in Dark Avengers: Infinity War Spot
The reviews are in. The final TV spots are being released. The premiere is in mere hours. All that’s left for you to do at this point is actually go see Avengers: Infinity War. Well, not all. Take this new TV spot you can watch, with new dialogue and some new footage centered around Thanos (Josh Brolin), the film’s most significant character.
Yup, that’s right, while you’re not going to out to wit, out charm, or out banter the Avengers or the assembled superheroes in this mega-film, the Russo Brothers themselves have called Thanos the film’s main character. In the new spot, titled “Remember,” Thanos sounds a plaintive note when he says he hopes “they” (as in the surviving people in the universe he doesn’t kill) remember the Avengers.
“Avengers,” Thanos says in his deep baritone, “I hope they remember you…I do hope, those that survive, remember everything.”
One of the things critics have been nearly unanimous on is how great a villain Thanos is, and that might be in part because he’s not some mindless brute. In fact, he’s been described by several critics as an almost sympathetic villain, a monster, no doubt, but one whose goes about his quest for cosmic domination for what he believes are the right reasons. While he’s patronizing the Avengers by telling them he hopes they’re remembered—considering this “hope” is predicated on the fact that he plans on obliterating them—you get the sense that he believes himself. That he truly hopes the people he lets survive will remember the Avengers, and everything that happened to bring about the destruction of half the universe (which will be the result if Thanos gets all the Infinity Stones), so that they never make the same mistake again. The mistake of believing in superheroes.
The other nearly unanimous note struck by the critics is how Infinity War‘s ending is truly stunning, even shocking. One is forced to wonder whether Thano’s dark hope is, perhaps, a eulogy of sorts for one of our favorite characters. Or maybe more than one.
Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 27.
