See the Extravagant World of Crazy Rich Asians in the First Trailer

Warner Bros. has finally released the first full-length for trailer Crazy Rich Asians, and we’re digging the comedy, the tone, and the breezy, charming presence of a bunch of up-and-coming stars.

Constance Wu (Fresh off the Boat) stars as the films protagonist Rachel Chu. Rachel is under the impression that her long-time boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) is just your typical guy—she’s wrong. When Nick invites her to travel with him to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding and to meet his family, Rachel discovers that he’s essentially the “Asian Prince William”—although he prefers to be the charming younger brother Harry—and is heir to the riches family in Singapore.

In response to traveling first class, Rachel whispers concerned “We can’t afford this”—oh Rachel, he can, he really can. She learns from her Singaporean best friends and college roommate Goh Peik Lin (Awkwafina) and Peik Lin’s rich father (John Cho) that Nick’s family are “the biggest developers in Singapore.” In short: they’re “crazy rich.” And Rachel will now have to navigate Nick’s extravagant world, of designer dresses and finger bowls—which Rachel almost drinks from, but who among us hasn’t made that mistake once or twice.

Fans knew before the trailer was released that Rachel would be going up against Nick’s mother, Eleanor Sung-Young, played my film legend Michelle Yeoh. From the trailer it looks like there is a lot of drama headed Rachel’s way in the form of Nick’s family and the social circles they run in.

“I know this much. you will never be enough.” Eleanor says cornering Rachel. But Rachel doesn’t plan on giving in that easily and she’ll fight to prove her worth and that she’s just as good as they are rich or not.

The one person she won’t have to convince is Nick, who has plans to marry Rachel…if his family will even allow it. Rachel sums up Nick’s inner struggle in a conversation with his mother, “If Nick chose me, he would lose his family. And if Nick chose his family, he might spend the rest of his life resenting you.”

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Crazy Rich Asians looks to be the rom-com 2018 deserves with plenty of family drama mixed in with equal amounts of hilarious comedy. We’re rooting for you Rachel!

Crazy Rich Asians premieres in theaters August 17.
