Joker and Marriage Story Lead the Golden Globes Pack
Your 2020 Golden Globes nominations have been announced, with Noah Baumbach‘s Marriage Story and Todd Phillips’ Joker leading the pack with six nominations each. Not far behind are Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In…Hollywood, each garnering five nominations. All four films received Best Motion Picture noms (with Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood landing in the Musical or Comedy category, for some reason), with actor nominations for the big stars from all of their films except (for some reason) Robert De Niro. Huh.
Having just seen a press screening of Sam Mendes’ 1917—another nominee for Best Motion Picture—we’re here to tell you this epic, harrowing World War I drama will be a major contender come Oscar season. Bong Joon-Ho’s beloved Parasite nabbed a Best Motion Picture (Foreign Language) nomination, as it had to. Rian Johnson’s excellent Knives Out fared well, earning nominations for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), with two acting noms for Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas.
The TV side of things is more of a head-scratcher. Ava DuVernay’s brilliant Netflix series When They See Us didn’t get a single nomination. Ditto HBO’s outstanding Watchmen. One HBO show that was shown the love was the incredible Chernobyl.
