Best of Summer 2019: Mark Hamill Finally Explains The Last Jedi‘s Blue Milk
*As summer draws to a close, we’re looking back at some of our favorite interviews and stories
Rian Johnson‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi was bold in so many ways. The writer/director took the narrative baton from J.J. Abrams after The Force Awakens and gave us a rich, complex middle trilogy film that challenged fans’ long-held beliefs about what made a Jedi and Rey (Daisy Ridley)’s parentage. There was also his decision to split up the three main good guys—Rey, Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac)—and give them three separate missions. (In our minds, it enriched the film and will make their reunion in Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker all that more compelling.) But what about Johnson’s courageous decision to change the color of space milk? Even bolder, friends! And finally, Mark Hamill himself has opened up about the blue milk, both what it actually was and how it was created. Mystery solved.
A brief reminder on when we encountered this bizarrely colored beverage. When Rey found Luke living his hermit life on Ahch-To, there were many disconcerting aspects of his existence she had to contend with. He seemed to be completely soured on the entire Jedi order, for starters. He was grumpy. He was filled with self-loathing over his failed mentorship of Kylo-Ren (Adam Driver). And perhaps most distressing of all, he’d swapped the blue milk he so famously drank in Star Wars IV: A New Hope for this green stuff. What made it even grosser was the green milk had to be literally milked from the udders of large Thala-siren aliens that lounged on the cliffs of Ahch-To. Hamill revealed to a fan on Twitter what the green milk actually was.
The green milk was just regular coconut water dyed green in post-production.#TrueStory #Yum ? https://t.co/1ZHd4Q3HMS

For a film franchise with lightsabers, Death Stars, and the Force, it turns out colored milk has consistently captured the attention of millions. Perhaps J.J. Abrams will give us one final take on the galaxy’s milk options with the 9th and final film in the Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker.
Yellow milk? Okay, now that would be disgusting.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker blasts into theaters on December 20, 2019.
