Behold: A Comprehensive Timeline of the MCU
Ever wanted to sort through all twenty films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and figure out exactly the order of every occurrence? Business Insider just did and they conveniently organized everything you need to know.
The task is certainly not as easy as some might think. It’s not just a matter of copying and pasting the events of the films in the order they appear. Some of the stories occur before or even during those in other movies that were already released, and the expositions of some movies often take us back into the far reaches of time and space to explain the origin of some artifact or character.
Take the Infinity Stones, for example. In the MCU, those little rocks are the nexus of power, and they have a long history. The timeline starts with their creation and tracks where they are located after the eons pass and the events of the films begin to take shape. It also charts the beginnings of characters like Ego and Malekith, who both tried to take over the universe while the tribes of Wakanda began to form and unite with their newfound wealth of vibranium.
From the mid to late 20th century, a lot happened following Steve Roger’s defeat of HYDRA during the Second World War. Tony Stark’s dad was hard at work creating SHIELD and working with arc technology, Ego visited Earth, and Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne opened the door to the quantum realm. In the 80s, Carol Danvers encountered a war between alien races, the fallout of which we’ll discover with 2019’s Captain Marvel.
Sadly, we know most of what happened after that. Between the lines, Thanos was amassing enough power and clout to make an attempt at the Infinity Stones. And what he did when he got them is the farthest into the future we can see until Phase 3 comes to an end next year.
Respect to the folks at Business Insider for taking the time to put the extensive sequence of events together, complete with handy graphics.
