Netflix Tops Most Nominated Network of the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards
It is official. Great TV isn’t just on television sets anymore. The nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today, and by the numbers, Netflix reigns supreme. Even with Game of Thrones back in the running, Netflix still edged out HBO for the most nods.
The streaming site only entered the Emmy playing field four years ago and has quickly risen to the top. Last year, even without a season of Game of Thrones eligible for voting, HBO still pulled down 111 nominations. This year, Netflix snapped up 112 nominations to HBO’s 108. Godless, Stranger Things, and GLOW were the racehorses for Netflix. However, for an individual show, Game of Thrones still holds the crown with 22.
Hulu also made a strong showing with The Handmaid’s Tale and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel picking up 20 and 14 nominations, respectively. Other big players are NBC’s Saturday Night Live at 21, HBO’s Westworld at 21, FX’s American Crime Story at 18 and Atlanta at 16, and HBO’s Barry at 13.
