Your 2018 Golden Globes Nominees Speak to a Really Good Year on Screens Big & Small

The Golden Globes nominee list this year is a real celebration of creativity, and rewards filmmakers who took big chances. Emblematic of just how wide-ranging and unique this year’s crop of films was, look no further than a Best Picture list that includes Guillermo del Toro’s gorgeous, dark creature feature The Shape of Water (for Drama) and Jordan Peele’s horror/comedy/social thriller Get Out for (Comedy). In fact, The Shape of Water topped out with the most nominations among film or TV at seven.

Back in September, The Shape of Water made a big splash at TIFF. With incredible period costume design by Luis Sequeira and stunning cinematography by Dan Laustsen, del Toro continues to rewrite the rules for monster movies. Nominations include Sally Hawkins for Best Actress, Octavia Spencer for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Richard Jenkins for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Guillermo del Toro for Best Director.

Get Out was released in February of this year, just as the previous award season was coming to a close, and fans were already pegging it as a major contender come awards season. Jordan Peele was meticulous in the method to his madness, and it paid off. Get Out preceded a year no one could have predicted, and looking back, the movie was almost eerily prescient. It’s one of those films that is of its moment, made by an artist shaped by, and now shaping, America’s cultural climate.

Unsurprisingly, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and Steven Spielberg’s The Post made a strong showing. Call Me By Your Name, The Disaster Artist, The Greatest Showman, I, Tonya, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri each earned their way onto an incredibly competitive Best Picture category. The biggest shock is possibly the absence of Phantom Thread for Best Picture. Daniel Day-Lewis did get a nomination for his final performance in the film. He’s competing against 21-year-old Timothée Chalamet, Tom Hanks, Gary Oldman, and Denzel Washington, but Day-Lewis is the likely frontrunner.

Coco is likely to lead as frontrunner of the best animated feature this year, competing against The Boss Baby, The Breadwinner, Ferdinand, and Loving Vincent. Coco’s signature song “Remember Me” also made it onto the Best Original Song list alongside selections from Ferdinand, Mudbound, The Star and The Greatest Showman.

Big Little Lies leads the TV nominations, and if the Emmys are any indication, it will clean up. The show pulled down six nominations – double that of Hulu smash hit The Handmaid’s Tale.

Much like Get Out, The Handmaid’s Tale was an eerily prescient piece of art that served as both a reflection of and warning sign to our current times. Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd both received performance nominations. As one of the most culturally relevant shows of the year, this one is already a winner in our book. The Crown, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, and This is Us will compete against The Handmaid’s Tale for Best Television Series Drama.

In the comedy series, Black-ish is the only show to return to the Best Television Series category. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Master of None, Smilf, and Will and Grace all made the list. There is some serious déjà vu seeing Will and Grace back on the list. The name hasn’t appeared on the Golden Globes since 2005, but the show proved to be just as fresh, funny, and relevant as the original series.

Looking at this list, all we can say is, what a year for entertainment. Thoughtful, provocative, and prophetic, there’s not a title on the nominations this year that you’ll want to skip. Here’s the full list.

The Golden Globes will air live on January 7.
