The Official Star Wars: The Last Jedi Countdown has Begun
Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s tickets are already on sale, which means we’re officially in countdown mode. What we didn’t expect as we prepared to return to the Star Wars universe was for major news to break about the future of the franchise, but break it did—and boy was it good news. Now that we know The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson is going to be creating an entire new trilogy, with brand new characters and brand new worlds, we’ll be watching The Last Jedi not only to see how Johnson has carried the characters and plot from The Force Awakens into deeper, darker territory, but we’ll also be looking for clues about what to expect in the brand new trilogy he’ll be crafting.
We’ve known for a while now that for The Last Jedi, Johnson had created a luxurious city called Canto Bight, that he described to Vanity Fair as a “Star Wars Monte Carlo-type environment.” This will give us some idea of Johnson’s world-building abilities. We’ve also gotten a look at the furry (and not so furry) creatures Johnson and his team have cooked up for The Last Jedi, including the porgs, which have already won the internet despite the film still being a month away from opening, and creatures like the Caretakers (related to the porgs) and those crystal covered wolf-like things. And we’ve heard from the film’s actors, who have all heaped praised on Johnson for taking their characters and the larger story into surprising, richer territory than they could have possibly hoped. Even more so than the great trailers and teasers, the scoops on the new worlds and creatures, and the fact that the production process for The Last Jedi was incredibly smooth, you can’t do better as a filmmaker than getting praise from the late, great Carrie Fisher, who said of her writer/director; “He has flaws in other areas, I just don’t know about them.”
We’ll likely get a little bit more information about The Last Jedi as we near its December 15 release, but nothing revelatory like a new trailer. We’re officially locked into the countdown now, with the major difference being we’re preparing to see both a brand new addition to our current Star Wars trilogy and the first film of many that Johnson will be writing, directing and/or producing for the franchise. The man appears to be as excited as you could imagine.
