Watch the Bonkers Teaser for Darren Aronofsky‘s mother! Starring Jennifer Lawrence
Director Darren Aronofsky is one of the best in the business at creating films that get under your skin. He made his name with the drug fueled screamer Requiem for a Dream, a truly astonishing film that was hard to shake. As was his super low budget Pi, about a delusional mathematician with some seriously bad headaches. In Black Swan, Aronofksy managed to turn the ballet into a body horror romp that was a totally bracing, utterly original film. Now with his latest, mother!, Aronofsky is in full beast mode, playing with our perception, in a psychological horror film that’s been kept tightly under wraps. This brand new discordant, bizarre, thrilling teaser only intensifies the mystery behind the production.
mother! has a fantastic cast—Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer. What we know of the plot thus far is this: “It’s about a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.” The teaser only complicates what’s already a very secret production, with overlapping voices playing while Lawrence’s character wanders through a house. We hear her ask, “What brings you to us?” And then Ed Harri’s voice respondsd, ““They told me I could find a room here.” Next Javier Bardem says, “He thought we were a bed and breakfast.”
In the last ten seconds, things get truly insane. We see flashes of a man walking into a fire, a cicada, Lawrence screaming, Harris seducing Pfeiffer’s character, a lightbulb exploding, and Bardem screaming “No!” The whole thing is unsettling and awesome.
mother! will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, and then hit theaters on September 15.
